I’ll admit I was rather ignorant growing up and the first time I had a conversation with someone and I pronounced Iran as “I ran” everyone roasted the shit outta me and shut me down, which like fair whatever. But my point is the pronunciation is secondary if you get the concept; that’s kinda the point of language and accents in general. If we have to pronounce every country or place as its residents call it then we should roast and ignore every English speaker that says “Germany” instead of Deutschland.

Right now French and English are the official languages of Canada. There are the English parts (the majority of the country) and the French parts (the biggest being Quebec). But it seems to me that the French-speaking parts punch well above their weight culturally. Because their language insulates them from the strong US cultural influence, giving them space to develop their own unique cultural identity and not have to compete with US media. So it would be a big cultural upgrade if all of Canada spoke French. Plus the French language is cool. Wouldn’t it just be cooler if we all spoke French more?

I saw a post get banned. Well I dont wanna be a taboo subject. The more we shut down conversations the more we are ostracized. We shouldnt be so dogmatic. A society where people are free to express unpopular opinions is the one we want to live in. Seriously folks.

More and more it seems like I’m seeing opinion columns being posted in the fediverse that are, to be fair, bad takes - but everyone seems to act like it’s representative of the entire publication. Which misses the entire point of opinion columns - they’re about providing different points of view, food for thought, if you will. Show you things outside of your bubble. The inevitable reality is that if you do that, you’re going to have some bad takes. If you don’t have some bad takes every once in a while, your opinion column is bad and you should feel bad.

I want to curate my feed to mostly just contain serious people. Doesn’t matter whether I agree with their views or not - it’s all about how those views are expressed. So many people on social media are just thrilled to have a megaphone and the ability to make noise. I don’t like noise.

More polarization and division comes from flame wars - burned out people lashing out at each other, encouraged by the algorithms and the social media platform design.

It’s the same kind of man who hates Twilight, Taylor Swift, BTS. They hate anything that women like and make it their personality even though no one ever asked for their opinion.

I’ve never understood why bathrooms or sports are segregated by gender. Makes absolutely no sense to me and I’ll go to my dying day believing it’s nonsense.

When I first looked up psyllium husk powder as a fiber supplement, people were complaining that it made the water thick and gross. That enticed me to buy it. And when the packaging said to drink immediately after mixing lest it thicken, I instead let it sit for a good 15 minutes until my glass of water had a smoothie-like consistency. Makes me love drinking water again and also sad that I can’t have it with every glass of water or else I get stopped up.

Have been almost completly vegetarian for the last 4 and a half years and was pretty much a carnivore before that, so I feel this is as unbiased of an opinion as is possible.

Perhaps it should be named “unconventional opinions that I still agree with”? Or perhaps “lol lets see what opinion they post now” (to be fair, the WHY ARE YOU BOOING ME? I’M RIGHT is sort of this)?

There are people who have legally changed their first names or last names, and some family members will still call them by their birth surname. I find this extremely disrespectful. What makes it worse is that these same people will say we need to respect people’s pronouns and respect them, but they don’t respect someone changing their name? If they don’t respect calling people by their new names, then don’t get mad when people don’t respect people’s pronouns. I’ll go a step further: if those people who don’t respect people’s names or pronouns are called a racial slur, I don’t care and feel no sympathy. If it’s okay for them to be disrespectful to people, then they can be disrespected too.

I recently posted a thread about an old movie from the 1950s (12 Angry Men), and provided spoiler warnings. More than one person replied jokingly that they were grateful for the spoiler warning for a 70-year-old movie. I’ve heard the same comment in one form or another many times over the years, and I really don’t get it.

School speed limits are unnecessarily complicated. So many times I’ll pass a school speed limit sign and sometimes it’s just “while flashing” which is easy to understand quickly. However, other times it has in very small print conditions such as during certain times or during weekdays or even the really vague “when children present”. Sometimes I won’t notice all of the print before I pass the sign, so I’ll just do the slower school speed limit and the driver behind me starts tailgaiting me because I’m going under the limit. So I suggest instead of having these limits be conditional school speed limits, they should just be the normal limits all the time. It wouldn’t hurt people to slow down when kids aren’t present, so just make the speed limit reduced all the time on roads around the school. Additionally, if this was the case, drivers would be used to going slow and wouldn’t forget to slow down during school hours

It can’t do the literal entire thing an operating system is supposed to do: manage applications and their resulting windows, in a sensible way.

This is referring to all the people who say I own this gun to protect against a tyrannical government. While I agree fighting a tyrannical government is noble Most of those people aren’t serious about it and are just LARPing. If you are serious about fighting for your freedom then you’d know that fighting alone will get you nowhere. No revolution or civil war has ever been won by scattered armed individuals with no organization, you need to join a group to be effective.

Voting makes you think your opinion matters while you vote, but it actually doesn’t matter. Voting makes you think you can change something, but it doesn’t change anything. Voting makes you think you should wait for a lot of time to change something in elections, while you can strike right away and shouldn’t wait for elections. Voting makes you think you are living in a free democratic country, but it is actually a monarchy and dictatorship.

I’m kind of surprised that this seems to be an unpopular opinion around here, since I’ve always thought of Lemmy as being pretty leftist as opposed to liberal/capitalist, but there seems to be a base assumption here that voting with your dollar and trying to purchase the most “ethical” thing through the most “ethical” channels is worth the time and energy.

I am obviously not saying people should be exploited, I am saying given the current conditions, one shouldn’t force themselves to be miserable, ashamed because they don’t physically have tons of money in the bank, or owe money, or whatever – if you are “"""just making ends meet"""” [a phrase that basically means, getting an A or B on the test of paying all your necessarily bills etc], it is as though you are expected, DEMANDED to vaguely feel like shit every day you’re not Wolf of Wall Street.

Hear me out here:

Historically, doctors used a bunch of scientifically invalid treatments. This was at the same time as the purge of proletariat medics and women healers (witch trials). With no alternative, we were at the mercy of whatever Doctors wanted to do.

“Old Reddit” was fine when it was all there was but the “new” UI was better and easier to follow. When I say “new” I mean circa 2020-2023 not whatever they’re doing now which looks awful. And by better I mean the look, feel, and UX and ignoring the shit video player and tracking code.

Look, I’m all for people doing and participating in things that they enjoy and far be it from me to tell anyone how to spend their free time but assigning celebrities a numerical value and then determining which you want to bang or have in your harem or something equally as strange is pretty low.

It smells terribly, exposes others to negative health effects without consent and is one of the biggest causes of littering. Simply put it is a major nuisance with no benefits apart from profits for the tobacco/drug industry and addicts getting their high.

Pressing the copilot button to instantly bring up a text box where you can interact with an LLM is amazing UI/UX for productivity. LLMs are by far the best way to retrieve information(that doesnt need to be correct).

This is a case where even I don’t like my own opinion, but I think it might be true. If it comes down to average Americans vs. the military, for example, we need as many people on board as possible. As unified a front as salvageable.

Every generation has had that one weird trend. This one’s here to stay. Get over it.

Not something I believe full stop, but imo there are signs that should there be a bubble, it will pop later than we may think. A few things for consideration.

I was looking at a couple of posts that express feelings of exhaustion and isolation that are extremely prevalent in modern life. And in the comments are people talking about how they’re able to deal with those pressures. I don’t think that’s a real solution to the stated problems. The real solution is replacing the system that demands an exhausting and isolating existence for so many in order to maintain itself.

There is no debating that feminism was necessary back then. Socially and legally women were at a severe disadvantage and something had to be done. Of course it’s a never-ending process as injustice will exist as long as humans exist, but the levels are very different nowadays in western countries compared to developing and exploited countries (no they aren’t “developing” they are being held back, but that’s a different topic).

First, so I’m not misunderstood: Science does of course exist and it is not religion. But:

I often times wonder if it would be better managed with more of an EU style system where certain standards are core across all states and then leave each country to truly govern themselves.

There’s a clear campaign against the mentally ill with the global rise of fascism. Lots of it shows up in anti homeless rhetoric, but you can see it in the MAHA and anti vaccination movements.

In all three cases all they are doing is providing a platform. The issue with the size of the outages that we’ve seen should be placed on all of the companies that are opting to use them and only them without any regards to redundancy or design.
