How is Matt Smith in this? I loved him in Doctor Who, and he was good in Terminator.
I have never watched Game of Thrones (this is a prequel?) does that really matter?
He is good. It took me a few episodes to get used to the wig, though.
And no - you don’t need to have seen Game of Thrones. There are some fan service level references that you will miss and it doesn’t establish its world as clearly, so I think it’s assumed viewers have some level of prior understanding. I re-watched House of the Dragon with my partner, who hasn’t watched Game of Thrones, and I didn’t have to explain anything to her.
