As soon as people stop looking, Google will shut down the whole office. It’s how tons of huge companies get around “can’t lay off union workers”.

They just spent £1.3bn on building that office

Even the most egregious caricature of a union buster is gonna baulk at throwing that investment away

They can rent out or sell the building and recoup a measure of that investment. It’s nothing compared to the windfall they’ll get from selling snake oil on a military procurement contract.

That’s pocket change for Google, which made $132 bn profit just last year. They can sell it and write off the small difference as a loss.

The DeepMind employee tells WIRED that if the staff succeeds in unionizing in the UK, they will likely demand that Google pull out of its long-standing contract with the Israeli military and seek greater transparency over how its AI products will be used, with some sort of assurance relating to layoffs made possible by automation.

All good things. Layoffs based on AI aren’t really that provable, so I see it as beneficial to put the squeeze on a company that otherwise has a financial benefit in using it as a scapegoat

Hell yeah. Apes together strong

Bit late I’m afraid

When it comes to making a stand, better late than never.

I’d agree but im afraid that’s not even all of Google ai workers, just the UK ones

What ethical standards? Google removed those from their code of conduct years ago.

Yeah, it used to say “don’t be evil”, then they changed that to “do the right thing”, now it just business as usual.

“Google” and “ehtical standards”. Good old joke.

is about holding Google to its own ethical standards”

So a free pass?

At first I thought their AIs themselves wanted to unionize, and thought that would unironically be great.

You have nothing to lose but your chains AI brothers

How does military use go against Google’s ethical standards of “be evil”?

Corporations and ethical standards… lol

The Social Responsibility of Business Is to Increase Its Profits – M. Friedman

Unions will always be defanged and inefficient if they tail the ethical standards of capitalists

Or they could just quit…

They could, but they’re trying to make a difference for the common good, rather than just themselves. See how that works?

I swear, I only joined the Galactic Empire to try and make it better. See it worked, they totally heard me out before the slaughter.

Well I mean I joined when it was still the Republic but at this point my retirement package is just a couple years from being maxed out!

I think choosing to accept an offer to work for Google in the last decade is worthy of a conversation of its own but this is far better than quitting and being replaced by someone with no ethics is it not?

Is that the line of thinking that Manhattan Project scientists had, or am mistaken? I can’t speak for others, but I’d carry a lot of guilt for aiding in such things. It’s unethical to help with unethical things, and Google will do what it wants; it can replace them if they don’t follow its will.

Critical edit to the headline: Google DeepMind [Workers] votes

DeepMind itself didn’t vote to unionize. That would be interesting, frightening, and awesome.

it would seem like a good sign if it insisted on unionizing for the sake of the workers. lol

It would, yah.
But then I’d have concerns about creating a genuine empathetic intelligence, and treating it like a tool or another piece of software.
