I simply cannot see any good coming from Foundations receiving funds from objectively bad Corporations. Hope I’m wrong.

Wait, the implication here is that there are good corporations?

Touché. You win.

there’s nothing more important than being right on the internet. lol

I’m more on the side of “never stop an adversary from making a mistake”.

If they give their dirty money but have no control or power over you, take it and use it for your own agenda.

Sometimes, evil corporations want to use a FLOSS tool for exactly the same things as its other users do, so if they give money to the developers to use to do what the users want, everyone benefits. Other times, evil corporations want to buy some of the good reputation of a FLOSS tool and/or infect it with their toxic reputation as a marketing strategy, and only evil benefits.

If they have a significant amount of money to donate to a foundation the odds are they’re evil anyway.

Foundations can just not get enough money and collapse, if you want.

Could be worse, and it’s free money.

The cynic (ML?) in me says there’s no free lunch under capitalism.

I am alterIng the deal. Pray I don’t alter it any further.

I’m totally okay with them receiving money from bad companies. It’s like vandals ordered to pick up highway trash - yo momma - as punishment.

Receiving Merge Requests from sloppers, though? That’s not cool.

"Like all Blender donations, it will be spent on core activities for the Blender project, supporting human-driven development, art, and creativity”.

And what does Anthropic get in return?

Likely nothing in this case since they aren’t going to be a full sponsor anymore. I believe real full sponsors can have some impact on the direction of feature development but that isn’t bad because it’s open source and adding features large companies want and will pay to have developed in open source tools isn’t bad.

“No generative AI functionality is currently available or planned to be integrated in Blender”

Well… if all the AI companies are making massive losses, might as well take some of their money from them and help them along.

Kinda weird there’s some insistence about open source only getting funding from the purest of sources.

Maybe anthropic wants the app better controllable by agents?

Yeah I’m 100% sure they are doing this A) for good PR (blender is a beloved app and funding them is awesome) b) to retain communication with the team for easier agent integration later c) to lobby for their AI.

I can totally understand that it doesn’t look great if blender accepts the money.

I am sure though that blender could probably need the money; open source software is criminally underfunded and those devs need money to survive at the end of the day.

Who fucking wanted this and do we have a replacement?

Did you read the article? Blender isn’t doing AI stuff.

lol, I was confused with the comments also.

Comments from other communities

I care less about the generative AI being built into blender, than all of everybody’s creative work in blender getting siphoned to Amodei, which I don’t see them backing off of (the thing about adding extra API calls Anthropic wanted isn’t addressed here, only the branding of the donation).

If a man’s paying your rent he is gonna feel entitled to something, whether you call him your boyfriend or not.

Blender showed who they are, they should not be trusted until there are role changes.

From Blender’s post:

After an in-depth discussion with the team and several community contributors, we have decided to receive the funds as a singular donation instead of a Development Fund membership, similar to how other open source organizations have handled such contributions. Anthropic has been informed and supports this decision.

To use your metaphor, it sounds like they took the money as one-time gift instead of ongoing rent payments.

As far as generative AI:

Most importantly, we need to urgently tackle the topic and clearly define how Blender is positioned in regards to generative AI technologies when it comes to the product, software development, documentation, and other activities. Discussions will happen in the public blender.org channels, based on drafts by the Blender team.

Blender is a tool for artists and creators, it’s made by humans for humans. No generative AI functionality is currently available or planned to be integrated in Blender.

I acknowledge that we are reading their press release with different amounts of charity, and that if you view them as communicating in good faith, your interpretation is reasonable.

I will note that on Mastodon they said they had changed their post to improve the optics to the community. This is also a reframe for optics.

They didn’t say they weren’t going to harvest your actions to train generative AI, they only said they’re not putting the generative tools in the app for the users.

Like I said, they’re taking the money, they’re still buddies with Anthropic, they say this was personally negotiated.

Look at how Harvard interacted with Jeffrey Epstein, same playbook here. Just cause the president of the university was flying on Epstein’s plane and honeymooning on his island doesn’t mean he had influence over Harvard! He wasn’t on the board of trustees!

Blender harvesting data to train gen AI would blow up in their faces so badly Anthropic would have had to donate a lot of money to make it worthwhile. And have you looked at the list of Development Fund members? Meta, Google and Adobe are already on there. I’m not sure that taking money from one more company that would be interested in that data really tips the scales.

When Ton announced he‘s stepping down last year I was worried. I‘m willing to label this as a one time slip up but it really doesn‘t help dispelling my worries at all.
